This book is close to perfect for me. So many feels!!!! I’m not going to rehash the story synopsis (you can read it at Goodreads here). But I’m just going to flow with my thoughts. Warning – these will be spoiler-y in nature. Why did you leave Damian, Alexa? I mean – I don’t fault you for doing it. You love Rylan (not “love love”), so I get your loyalty to him and desire to save him – especially considering his condition when you escaped Rafe’s camp. But Damian is the man! Which he proves by letting you go after him, even though he is scared to death of losing you. Oh… I have such love for that fictional character.
I’ve read other people comment on how the book felt rushed. While I agree to an extent, I didn’t need the author to drag it out either. Alexa and Eljin tracking Rafe and Rylan for a while; they were traveling underground to reach King Armando forever; Alexa was held captive for several days; when escaping the Dansiian army, she traveled alone (well, with her horse Nia); she also traveled solo to get to Damian and the rest of her people in Blevon. I think Larson did a good job letting us know there was a significant passage in time without getting too bogged in the details. So, I was actually good with pace of the book. But I guess the only reason why I slightly agree, is because I didn’t want the story to end! I could have easily read this book in a day, but was trying to pace myself because I didn’t want to say goodbye.
People also commented on wanting more romance in this story. While I agree that I love the scenes between Alexa and Damian, it didn’t bother me that there wasn’t a whole lot of it. While Damian is a huge character in the series, it has always been about Alexa and the challenges she faces to protect those she loves. So again, was cool with what romance we got; especially with the epilogue.
Did anyone else begin to think Rafe was all but forgotten? At the end, it seemed like it was all about the black sorcerers until we see one-eyed Rafe making his way up the mountain (damn it!). I was not surprised to see that Alexa was able to overcome his mind control. But not fast enough, because it resulted in the death of Tanoori…
Rylan!!! Dear, sweet Rylan. While I never rooted for him to hook up with Alexa (I am not young enough to use the term “ship”), it still made me sad when he died and the circumstances in which it occurred. Plus the book made such a good point – the “Ren Zhu sas” couldn’t have did their thing 5 minutes earlier?
The epilogue – so gratifying! Yes, the story broke my heart several times, as we lost so many people dear to Alexa and Damian. But the last chapter and epilogue showed how they needed to carry on and find happiness, lest they disrespect the sacrifices made by those they lost. Honestly, I read the epilogue before I started the story, because I HAD TO KNOW!!!! I’m one of those rare few who don’t mind knowing spoilers, and if anything, knowing made me that more excited to read it.
With it being a holiday weekend, I think I’ll just go ahead and read the entire series all over again. This is an excellent series! I’d recommend it for YA Fantasy lovers, and also for those who enjoy stories with a bit of romance. The action is great, and Alexa is an excellent heroine. I am definitely looking forward to future work by Larson.

Endure Defy Trilogy Book 3 Sara B Larson Books Reviews
I am sorry i ordered this last book--book 2 was a disappointment , but i thought maybe she would pick it back up in book 3. But i'm not even sure i will finish it. There is not really an interesting plot in this series. it started out potentially interesting with the first book, but after that it's basically been about role reversal of an old plot, where the female constantly cries and watches the man go into battle. so in this one the main theme is the heroine again and again leaves the teary eyed hero as she goes off for some exploit to save him and the kingdom. the plot in the last one is ridiculous. in book 2 she stabs a friend under the bad guy's power to get away and leaves him with the bad guy, which we assume means knowing he could be killed. then the whole plot of book 3 is that she gets a message that the bad guy will harm the guy left behind. so now she has to go back and get him. huh? added to that she is keeping a secret that endangers everyone around her and just keeps king of forgetting to tell people. i can allow for some stretching of belief for a plot, but this goes too far and just is lazy . instead of creating something actually exciting, tension is attempted to be created by this silly theme.
So the 1st book Defy was amazing. Non-stop turning of pages. That was a great story. However, after that, not so much. I realized halfway through book 2 that I had already read this series. However I couldn’t remember the ending so I went ahead and bought the last book too. The story really starts to go downhill in the second book. There was no more story. It was all traveling. But the most frustrating thing was that gone was this amazing heroine, who was strong and confident and an amazing fighter. We were left with a sniveling cry-baby. Who constantly put her feelings aside and didn’t cry when a loved one died but literally cried on frustration at every turn.
Spoiler alert!!!! Spoiler alert!!!! Spoiler alert!!!!!!
By book three the entire story was just turned into a boring recount of how everyone died and then ex-machina happens to save the day. Literally no one important saves the day or stands up to win the war. Some weird being wait till everyone dies then says enough and ends the war. Like really? You let all those loyal to you just die for no reason when you could have ended it all whenever you wanted. Just ridiculous of an ending.
So why did I still give this 3 stars if I gave it such a bad review? Well because I believe this was the authors first trilogy. It’s a pretty good effort for being the first. Secondly, taking the story as a whole the 1st book is so good it pulls the rest of the novel grade up to the 3 star.
