This story touched me. I remember the Bhopal chemical disaster, but Anjali lives it first hand. She is waiting for her cheating low-life husband to pick her up at the train station. He had bought her ticket to visit her parents after she went off on him when she found out he had been cheating on her and only married her to cover up the affair to this same woman. She had been there over an hour when a kindly cab driver offers to take her home and her world changes forever as the toxic gas fumes overtake them. Prakash is sleeping happily after spending time with his mistress and forgets to pick her up. Anjali does the unthinkable when she wakes up: She divorces Prakash and sells her jewelry to put herself through school.Sandeep is a professor who has no plans on marrying. Anjali is a friend of a friend and somehow they find each other and form a life. They have a son who is bright and beautiful, but doomed by the genetic effects of the gas exposure. They live cheaply and spend most of their money on their ailing son. They also have to take in Sandeep's unhappy widowed sister who had beggared him to get a husband who was a banker only to end up a widow with no means. Anjali works hard and comes home to work harder still and cook and take care of her son. She is not unhappy and loves her family. It does not bother her that she has so little material things, because she is a strong woman.
The cultural taboo of divorce for the middle class has her own family turning against her when her husband lies to them about his affair. They refuse to see her and apologize to him for her behavior. His lies save his military career even though everyone knows she was telling the truth. They all knew he was cheating on her and that he had an affair at his last posting. He remarries and has a nice upper middle class existence that differs greatly from the carefully frugal life Anjali and Sandeep live. Then one day at the market, Anjali sees Prakash and all the pain and resentment Anjali thought she had dealt with come back to haunt her as her son's health worsens.
This is a very readable story for a literature novel. Anjali is a heroine that we can relate to. She is strong, but cannot help but fume about the unfairness of life that would allow Prakash and his new wife to be so comfortable when she and Sandeep have so little to help their dying son. Anjali's struggle to deal with everything life has thrown at her when Prakash keeps interfering in her life and causing her more grief is moving and easy to relate to. I knew I would end up crying my eyes out and I did.

A Breath of Fresh Air Ballantine Reader Circle Amulya Malladi Books Reviews
Anjali's grandmother introduces her to a dashing army man in the hopes of making a match. When Anjali meets him, she is excited by the thought of marrying him and leading an exciting life of moving from place to place and having lots of parties to give and to go to. Her parents think that this will be a good match so the marriage is arranged. But Anjali faces some surprises as soon as the wedding has taken place. After less than one year of marriage, Anjali finds that her husband has been cheating on her. Devastated, she returns home for a visit with her parents. While there she determines that she needs to go back and try to repair her marriage. She arrives in Bhopal ready to start anew when the Union-Carbide factory has a gas leak. Thousands are dead and many are injured. Prakesh was scheduled to pick Anjali up at the train station. Because he has forgotten her, she is involved in the gas leak. She is severely injured. This brush with death causes her to reflect closely on her life and she decides she has the strength to get divorced which is not accepted in India at the time.
A divorced woman without alimony has to find a job and support herself. Anjali begins her new life and continues to show herself as a woman who is independent and has strength. `As we see the story unfold, we experience the raw emotion, challenges, love, problems, traditions, and lives of the characters. The story is well written. I especially enjoy how the author has entwined real stories such as the gas leak and the assassination of Indira Ghandi into the fiction of the story. Having a glimpse into the life of woman in India as she enters an arranged marriage which is loveless or the fear of a mother who might have to live with a son and daughter-in-law who hates her are extremely interesting. I would certainly read more by this author.
I am having a difficult time finding words to describe this books. The book was so compelling that I remembered vividly when the New York Times reported on the tragedy in Bhopal India, I was sad and angry all at once when I heard the news. Each time I read books from this author I am constantly fighting with each character, I finally understand why my emotions is in turmoil because her stories brings out the inhumane side of us and forces the humanitarian side of us to questions one motive with those around us that we love. Thank you for your excellent writing and work that you build into each the characters.
